The duo Salt Suns combines acoustic instrumentation and nuanced harmonies to create music that is intricate, sweetly personal, and quietly moving. Song writer Dylan Flynn and multi-instrumentalist Isaiah Mead began playing together in the mountains of North Carolina, inspired by the Old-Time music tradition, and have since returned to their native west coast to pursue music that is at once rooted in American Folk traditions and occidental in sound. Bringing together the tones of guitar, fiddle, light percussion and vocals, Salt Suns is certain to pull you into a world of joy and blues, love and heartache –– and leave you humming melodies for days.

Read MoreHanna Haas’s EP “Unstruck" is a selection of Hanna's songs that seek to grapple with the big questions of life. Hanna's songs recall change, reminisce on the deaths of loved ones, relationships lost, “platform-moving towns”, while at the same time remember what is constant, such as the beating of our hearts and the mystery that perhaps never dies. Hanna's songs speak to the constant rising and falling of life and the eternal beauty of it all.
Hanna has written music since her early teens, and her soothing guitar and soft vocals powerfully draw the listener in. "Unstruck" was recorded with Cookie Marenco in 2016. Hanna was able to collaborate with good friends who contributed to her songs such as Jessie Marks, Chris Lynch and Ben Berry (from Marty O'Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra), Erin Chapin (from the Rainbow Girls), Alexis Hawk (from MAJK) and her brother and classical guitarist Aaron Haas.

Tolan Shaw is an award-winning artist who has risen in the San Diego music scene as a pop/rock singer-songwriter who will stop at nothing to build a career with his original music. Both a solo acoustic troubadour and the frontman of his own band, Shaw’s music is catchy and soulful, bluesy and melodic, poppy and sincere. It is also highly inspired by his yearn to travel and to learn about the world and its people.
In the past few years, Shaw focused heavily on songwriting and performing nationally and internationally, releasing singles and quality music videos which have gained the attention of radio and industry ears. Highlights include receiving regular radio play for songs off his 2015 release “Chin Up,” being included on the list of 91X San Diego’s top 91 songs of 2014 for his song “Eyes,” and successfully booking and performing a 5 week U.S. tour, a 2 week Mexico tour, and a 2 week Canada tour in 2015. Shaw’s strong songwriting also led him to multiple placements and licensing deals with various TV networks and companies, including ABC Family, Jimmy Kimmel Live, MTV, and Verizon Wireless.
2015 brought a “Best Pop Album” San Diego Music Award for “Chin Up,” multiple sold out shows, and Shaw’s first major festival appearance at San Diego’s KAABOO Festival, alongside names like The Killers, Ben Harper, and Zac Brown Band. He was also named an official Taylor Guitars artist, and in the end of 2015, Shaw linked up with Taylor and GoPro, among other local brands, to create a Travel-Music video series called Wandersong- a project which would take him to 9 countries in Southeast Asia to write songs and release videos “following the inspiration of a traveling singer-songwriter.”
2016 is a year of brand new travel based songs and content, new collaborations, and constant performing for Shaw, with the hopes of inspiring a broader audience with his craft and giving back to his community.
The tight-knit, beach town of Santa Cruz is known for its eccentric, creative and laid-back surf culture – an ideal setting for a diverse folk duo who are seeking to inspire the mind-sets of their audience.
Wild Iris is the culmination of efforts from Bryan Shelton and Kate Mullikin who formed the band in the fall of 2013 after meeting at a beachside convenience store. Bryan was playing a big, black guitar and Kate started improvising a melody to compliment it. They hadn’t shared more than a few words before they were writing their next song. For Kate though, the decision to commit to being in a band was more difficult than Bryan’s. She was still getting over the grief of helping her father and mother pass away a few years since. After telling Bryan she would sleep on the idea, she dreamed that her father, a star of the Broadway stage, sat on the edge of her bed, wiggled her big toe and announced, “It’s your turn.”
Bryan already had the name ‘Wild Iris’ in mind and Kate dug the double meaning, evoking the image of a flower and an eyeball. They adopted the moniker, released their home recorded debut EP in 2014 and began gigging with a back-up band. Kate’s poetic instincts provided the melodic structure for Bryan to build his flat picking under – a style gleamed from years of practice and time well spent listening to Mississippi John Hurt, Woody Guthrie and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, the latter with whom Wild Iris has shared the stage.
Onstage, the band exuded a kind of therapeutic honesty, which when mixed with their elegant musicality went a long way with the locals and they were encouraged to pursue a professionally recorded debut full length. The new, self-titled LP was produced by Andy Zenczak at Gadgetbox Recording Studio where Wild Iris’s rustic arrangements were imbued with the rich sound of analogue gear, often accompanied by upright bass, banjo, fiddle and percussion.
Regarding the reception of their debut, both of its creators have a particularly Zen outlook on the matter. Bryan asserts that “What really motivates me is the idea that someday my great-great-grandson may come across our CD and, in an abstract sense, get to interact with me.”As for Kate, she mirrors his humbling sentiments as she pauses a moment to take in the view over the Monterey Bay. “Bryan and I hope that our music will simply make some one, somewhere stop what they are doing to stomp their feet and to hum along for a little while. We are putting our gifts out there and hope there are those who will receive them happily.”
there are so many talented friends and family who make up the DIO community... the list from which we chose for the lineup this year was close to 200 bands... so that's why we have the friends and family sessions on Sunday morning.. because we want to showcase all the hidden talent that's not on the stage in any given year... so here are some of the folks you might see poking around DIO this year... say what's up!
