David and Rene Pacheco are East L.A. underdogs who first stepped onto the scene as Thee Commons – a spitfire trio that shredded surf, cumbia, and punk music into a tangy, tropicali pulp. Six years into Thee Commons the brothers decided to pivot from their established trajectory and created Tropa Magica. They lost their label and management during the change but also obtained the freedom to develop their signature PCP (psychedelic cumbia punk) genre.
The next time you look up at the California night sky you might notice a shooting star blasting through the night glowing like a smile. There’s a good chance it’s just Pearl Charles on the way to her next gig, racing towards her bright future.

I try to be really straight and pure and powerful with it because I feel a lot of power in that simplicity. I think simplicity is taken for granted. Playing slow and quiet really perfectly is really hard to do. Everyone wants to play faster and loud but playing slow and quiet is one of the challenges in music.
The Do-It-Ourselves Fest musical philosophy can pretty much be summed up in three words: book dope shit. Simple philosophy, really, and one that has been faithfully followed sine the festival’s inception in 2013. It’s also kind of a hard thing to do. Festivals nowadays, especially behemoths like Bonnaroo, Outside Lands and Coachella, have the tendency to skew lineups to the broadest and most bankable acts, creating a situation where lineups can quickly become stale and unoriginal.
Our Sessions from DIO Fest 2018 have arrived! Kelly McFarling and her lovely crew perform an acoustic version of their track “Records” by the creekside. See inside for the skinny.
We have a number of sweet ways to contribute to the vibe at DIO Fest! See inside for some more details…
The red trees were thick as thieves and rose powerfully above the lush, green underbrush of the forest. Behind me was five hours of dreams and thoughts as I traveled from one side of California to the other one April morning. Ahead of me lay a winding track of road that knotted and twisted up through the steep, coastal mountains outside of Santa Cruz.
Friends...here's your first dose of Spotify jams from the initial lineup.
